Everything seems to be back to normal. I fixed it by going Dreamhost PS JeffM one of the Dreamhost support guys was sympathetic to my situation and fast tracked the Dreamhost PS setup. I also got a monthly discount on that PS and this helped in my decision to stay with Dreamhost.

I did do some more research on the 500 error problem. I found that this error has everything to do with resources. Dreamhost then confirmed this by e-mail when the PS went through. The e-mail reads:

Sometimes, if you’ve set your levels WAY too low (you’ll get “500
internal server errors” or other problems), you’ll need to reboot
your private server (it’s super-quick) before resetting your memory:

     https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=vserver.reboot

Which to me confirms that resources on the shared hosting server are over taxed causing 500 errors. Maybe Dreamhost should consider allocating more resources or reducing the amount of websites per server.

Being the cheapest is nice but being the most trustworthy one would be better. If you do a search on dreamhost problems on google or search Dreamhost on twitter you’ll see the 500 error pop-up almost every day.

You would think if this happens so much they would permanently fix it instead they blame the customer.

As said my problems are fixed and I’m happy for now. I can now get back to blogging and writing articles. Because of all these problems I have some huge backlog of hardware to review and article ideas to work on.

I just moved hosting of all my domains to Dreamhost. All was well until Sunday morning (17th of may) at about 1:32 AM or so, an error 500 showed up. All of my blogs run on one Wordpress installation using a method called Virtual MultiBlog. This means that all blogs also share the plug-in directory.

If one blogs shows a 500 internal server error because of an error I made in one of the PHP scripts of a plug-in I’m working on then all blogs should have a 500 error. This how ever was not the case only me.madberry.org and madberry.org had the 500 error. My other blogs where slow but not showing the 500 error. Because of this I knew that it was an error caused elsewhere on the server.

Madberry.org and all of my other blogs are on a “shared” hosting server at Dreamhost called Jubilee. This makes it apparently very difficult for Dreamhost to find the problem. On a shared server all of the websites hosted on it share resources. This means that if you or someone else starts running a script that takes up to many resources or breaks the Appache server all of the websites hosted on that server go down or get slow.

This was the case this Sunday. Causing madberry.org to go down for 23 hours and 15 Minutes. This means no Adsense impressions (which pay for the hosting). The only way to get around this would be to get a VPS (Virtual Private Server) However my one cardinal rule for running my blogs is that they cannot cost any money. Help offered is offered for free after all. Before the crash this weekend visitors where climbing. But visitor numbers aren’t enough yet to warrant the higher cost of VPS. We will get there but until we do this could happen again.

As of right now I have asked Dreamhost how they will compensate for this downtime. I still have to move registration for all domains it would be nice to get a discount on the transfers. We will see…

Another bedside update. Marcy is doing fine she has some pain and discomfort. We expected that. Right now she is sleeping. She wanted to go visit Pauline earlier so she walked over there. It was a brisk walk and she decided it was better to go back in a wheelchair after visiting for a bit.

Just in case anybody is wondering Pauline will be going home (well to a motel room at least) today, she doesn’t want to so they might decide to keep her, she is doing good as well. She says she has almost no pain unless she turns on her side.

After she got back to the room she was ready to take a nap. They where talking earlier about releasing her but when while sitting next to Pauline the RN walked in and she said proberbly tomorrow. Which is fine by us. She still needs to go to the bathroom. They pulled her hose lol. She also needs to finish some more water.

Okay need to go while she is sleeping I’m going to grab a bite in the cafeteria (my diet is non existent over here, no healthy options and this is a hospital ) at least I’m still drinking diet. I guess I’m just going to have to compensate when we get home.

More later………

She would have gotten up at 4am but she was nauseous. We will try again today. For those who don’t know she has to get up and walking because of the blood cloths. To prevent those they don’t only put the leg cuffs on they also want you to walk.

The picture above is from today. The most pain she is having right now (which you can read of her face) is from the headache. This headache is from the morphine which they stopped just now. She will be getting tylenol instead. The other pain that bothers her the most is her back. This is from the bed. The bed has a mattress on it that feels like brick.

More when I know more later.

PS Thanks for the flowers bigreddy aka Brenda

You’ve bought a wii but now what? Which games are fun, which games are other people buying? This article can help!

The point of this article is to provide a top ten of must have games for the wii. The list is compiled from several lists on Amazon.com.

When buying a wii bundle you already get wii sports. But of course after playing that a while you will find yourself looking for more games online. There are hundreds of choices to make, what game should you buy what is fun to play?

This article will list 10 of the most popular games out there to date. I did not look at the age or rating, so if you are buying for your child then don’t forget to check te rating. There are 506 wii related lists in listmania.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl On almost every list so therefore the #1 game to get.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess also a classic which is why 128 lists had this one listed.

Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel this game is in 71 of the lists researched for this article.

Of course I did not list every game here so your favorite might not be on here. I’m sorry but I only looked at the listmania lists on Amazon. Keep an eye on this space the next list will be especially for the family with small children.

It’s been a busy first ten days of this year.

If I haven’t seen you in person then a “Happy New Year”.

I have been working on a new project which should be ready for launch the end of next week. I can’t say to much about it (vultures everywhere) but I’m sure it will help a lot of people who are less Internet savvy then we are.

I’ve also been busy social networking all over the place. It’s amazing how many social network site are out there. I’ll now use Ping.fm to consolidate blogposts to all networks I’m a member of.

I plan on posting atleast three times a week here every week in the new year so bookmark my blog if you want to be kept up on all my activities.

What’s new in ‘09?

The projects currently running will be build out some more. Also I have a couple of ideas for new projects that need development. So I will have no time to sit still.

We finally caved to the craze that is Wii we’re looking around for the best deal on a console. If you have any tips on what games to buy then let me know.

I like bargian hunting whether it is in Walmart or online. One of the best sites to do this at is on ebay. But how do you get the great deals how do you win that auction with that low price?

MyIbay.com’s sniper is the answer. You can get the add-on for Firefox here it’s what I use.

How does it work?
First this is not for “Buy It Now” auctions, you don’t need it for those auctions they already have a set price. Goto the page on Ebay of the item you want to buy. If you installed the add-on than you will find a Snipe-it link on the site:

If you are not watching the item yet then the watch item button should be above it.

The second way to do this is via the myibay.com login with your Ebay account and select tools click search and search for the item then follow the directions to Snipe-it.

I’ve been using this service a while now and have not noticed any suspicious Paypal activity. Also my account has not been hijacked (which was one of my concerns).

If you want to win it Snipe-it.

The author of this blog did not get any payment for writing this blog post. Nor is he affiliated with Myibay in any way.
